What inspired me to start blogging?

I had just read “Tribes” by Seth Godin and for any of you who have read it, you understand what I mean when I say “sheepwalker” (i.e. someone who “has been raised to be obedient” and who is comfortable “with a brain-dead job and enough fear to keep in line.”). I was part “sheepwalker” in my past life and I decided that I was ready to move on.

A couple days after finishing the book, I heard Drew McClellan speak at the Greater Des Moines Partnership on how to use blogging to increase traffic to your business’ website. That got me thinking: I AM my own business right now, so maybe if I start blogging, I would draw attention to myself and my situation. Once I got this idea in my head, there was no sleeping that night. I got up early the next morning and started blogging. A week later, the Des Moines Register contacted me about hosting my blog on their online business section. Juice Magazine soon followed.

I hope I’m helping people. I want to make a difference. I really want this site to be a place where the Unemployed of Des Moines can connect and share job search tips. I also have a page dedicated to networking events going on around town that are free or cost a minimal fee to attend.

If you are interested in guest blogging, please let me know. I can’t see being unemployed from any other perspective than my own, so sharing our situations is the only way that the full picture can be presented. If you’ve attending an amazing networking event that I’ve missed, PLEASE let me know so we all can take advantage of it next time.

I’ve lived in Des Moines for the past 8 years and think it’s a great place. Since losing my job at the beginning of February, I’ve discovered a whole new side of Des Moines that I hadn’t been taking advantage of; the social and professional clubs and networking opportunities. I’m meeting so many great people – Des Moines is amazing!
